The Jeep Wrangler YJ was in production between 1986 and 1995. In February 1986, the Jeep Wrangler YJ was unveiled, entering production that March, and going on sale on May 13, 1986.
The Jeep YJ, sold as the Wrangler in the United States, was built in Toledo, Ohio, using the same plant that produced the Willys Jeeps during World War II. The new Jeep was intended to be more comfortable on-road in an attempt to attract more daily drivers. It was a significantly new design with a wider track, slightly less ground clearance than the CJ7 predecessor with more comfort and improved handling. Despite the new grille, the body is very similar to that of its predecessor the CJ-7, and it is interchangeable with some major modifications. The YJ also was given a larger windscreen over the CJ. The YJs are easily identifiable due to the rectangular headlights and the fact that the wiper blades rest on the windscreen, giving this version a distinctive look. 632,231 YJs were built until 1995, although YJs were still sold into mid-1996, bringing the total production number to 685,071 units.
This is the 4.0 High Output version, in eye-catching dark grey metallic with cream leather and black interior trim, with a black hard top. The 4.0 litre engine is the preferred choice, with manual transmission and switchable 2/4 wheel drive. Over the recent years this Jeep has some tasteful modifications from standard specification including a 4" Rough Country lift kit, steel wheels with 33" tyres and various improvements. This is one of the very last registered YJ models and an increasingly rare sight on our roads. These Jeeps are incredibly capable off road in any conditions, with optimal engine performance to match.
This car has covered 122,353 miles - an average of just over 5,500 miles per year over its 22 year life.
On the Road:
I absolutely adore driving this Jeep, it’s so much fun! It's got immense charm and character, and it gives you a wonderful sense of 'Americana' every time you clamber up into the driver's seat. The Jeep starts first turn of the key, with the gutsy 4.0 litre straight six engine offering bags of grunt and torque. It surges eagerly under acceleration, starts, stops and does what it should. The ride quality is admittedly not quite as refined as a modern car, similar to a Defender in many ways, but it's engaging to drive nevertheless, happy at any speed and goes wherever and whenever you need it to. I have driven a number of these Jeeps, this one is very smooth and drives very well with no significant noises from the drivetrain. These cars can be used for everyday commuting if required, as 'go anywhere' family and pet transport, as a working thoroughbred 4x4, full on mud-plugger, or just for pleasure as a weekend treat - by being capable of all uses this car is a brilliant all-rounder.
This car is fitted with the fuel injected 180 hp 4.0 litre (3960cc) AMC 242 straight six engine, one of four AMC engines kept in production when Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. Chrysler engineers continued to refine the engine and the last in the line of the AMC inline sixes, the 4.0 is regarded as one of the best Chrysler 4x4 off-road engines ever made. A Motor Trend long-term test noted "this long-lived OHV powerplant has a reputation for getting people where they need to go" as well as "much love expressed by owners for the torquey 4.0-litre/190-horsepower inline six." The engine is known for longevity, and can sometimes cover more than 300,000 miles without rebuilding. It also features a timing chain which should last the life of the engine, as opposed to a timing belt which needs changing at regular service intervals.
The car has the Aisin-Warner AX15 manual transmission introduced in the 1988 (mid-year) YJ Wrangler and XJ/MJ Cherokee/Comanche Jeeps, and found in 1988-1999 Jeep XJ, YJ, and TJ models. They are generally regarded as the best five-speed transmission ever installed into a Jeep. They are an excellent gearbox, and remain in production by Aisin-Warner.
The new MOT runs until 20th January 2021 with no advisories, and there were no advisories on the previous 4 MOTs either.
As you can probably see from the pictures, this Jeep really is a one-off vehicle and is in good condition for its age. The interior is also in good condition, with some slight wear as you would expect. It's not really a 'concours d'elegance' kind of vehicle, but as with all of these Jeep Wranglers, it has developed a characterful patina and wears its age with pride. It’s always difficult to express in words the condition of any car, and most people have differing opinions about condition, so the best way to get a true impression will be to view this lovely car in person. I’m confident that anybody with realistic expectations will be delighted to own and enjoy this awesome four wheel drive. It has a few quirks and character, so the best way to work out if it is the right car for you, would be to come and have a look.
The general value range for these legendary Wranglers in good, road worthy and presentable condition with long MOT is normally £6000 - £10,000 with modified and immaculate examples often priced considerably higher. This Jeep is offered to sell swiftly at a very tempting £9950. This is very good value if you are looking for a modified Jeep, as conversion from standard trim to this specification would probably cost in excess of £3000 on top of the purchase price of an unmodified Jeep.
This is a hugely entertaining 'proper' 4x4, hugely powerful, coupled with superb traction and ultimate 'go anywhere' credentials, it’s sure to put a smile on your face with every mile. With the the roof and doors removed (a 10 minute job) on a sunny day, it's hard to beat the thoroughly enjoyable experience. It’s a great conversation starter, and being so far removed from all of the humdrum everyday cars on our roads, people can’t stop staring at it. If I'm honest, I rather hope this takes a while to sell. If so, I might find the time be use it myself!
