The second generation Mercedes-Benz SLK, internally designated model R171, is a two-passenger, front-engine, rear-drive, retractable hardtop roadster manufactured and marketed for model years 2004-2010. The SLK name designates Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light) and Kurz (compact, or short) essentially being designed as a shorter version of the range topping SL.
The R171 features a number of revisions compared to its predecessor, the R170: a 30mm longer wheelbase, increased length (72mm) and width (65mm), 40% increased use of high strength steel, seven-speed automatic transmission, adaptive two-stage airbags, head/thorax sidebags and a revised roof mechanism (marketed as the Vario roof) deployable in 22 seconds (previously 25 seconds) with a rotary-pivoting rear window enabling a more compact folded roof stack and trunk storage increased by 63 litres with the roof retracted. Optional features included an innovative forced air, neck-level heating system integral to the headrests, marketed as Airscarf.
The fully galvanized bodywork, which features 19 percent improvement in static bending and 46 percent improvement in torsional strength with the roof down, also features a 3% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency, with a Cd value of 0.32. The design has been aerodynamically optimized to minimize interior draughts with the top retracted. Mercedes marketed the R171's tapering front end styling by designer Steve Mattin as ‘Formula One’ inspired.
The history of this car:
This car will first registered to a lady from Abingdon, and has had only 2 owners to date.
This car has the top level specification, pretty much everything apart from SatNav.
The folding metal hard top opens and closes swiftly and flawlessly. Fantastic in summer, yet safe and secure in the winter. The metal hard roof stows in the boot in a matter of seconds, leaving decent storage space below. Heated leather seats and 'Airscarf' are an absolute must if you are buying an SLK.
The Airscarf is a high level heater blower in the headrest of the seats which blows a scarf of warm air around your neck. Perfect for chilly mornings, or sunny winters days, or travelling at higher speeds with the roof down. This is a 'must have' gadget, as everybody wants the Airscarf, and it's brilliant.
53,502 miles, an average of roughly 4,500 miles per year.
Full service history, mostly Mercedes main dealer and specialist. The service indicator says the next service isn't due for another 12,378 miles, so probably a year or two before the next service, depending on the mileage covered.
On the Road:
The car starts swiftly to the engaging engine rumble. The engine sounds beefier than the size would suggest, with the muted whine of the supercharger, and with a raspy exhaust note under acceleration. It is quick, nimble, light yet precise steering, great fun on twisty roads and impressively sure-footed.
One of the nicest, well balanced cars you can buy, it drives incredibly smoothly.
The car is perfect for all shapes and size of driver, the seats are massively adjustable up and down,
back and forward, and the steering wheel is height and reach adjustable too. The seating and steering position can be adjusted for any size of person, from tiny to huge.
1.8 litre supercharged 4 cylinder, giving you the economy of a smaller engine, but with the power of a bigger engine. The engine is very smooth and pulls well in all gears. The supercharged models have lively acceleration and a pleasing exhaust note.
The tiptronic gearbox is very smooth and changes exactly as it should, whether in comfort, sport or manual mode.
The car has recently passed the MOT with no advisories and has MOT until October 2018.
The car is incredibly well made with real German quality feel as you would expect from a Mercedes. Everything is solid, well-engineered and long lasting. The bodywork has a deep, rich and lustrous shine, and is in very good condition with no signs of damage or repair. The seats are in excellent condition with barely any traces of wear, with no rips or tears. The dash also shows 'No Malfunction' from it's onboard diagnostics. Wheels and tyres in excellent condition.
These cars are now exceptionally good value for money, you would struggle to find any other car so well built, with all of the features and premium quality, for such a good value price. This example is priced very attractively at £4,950.
This is a fantastic ‘feel good’ sports car, a really well-built and entertaining hard top convertible that you can use all year round. Perfect for making the most of those wonderful sunny days in the winter, or summer.
We have owned four SLKs over the years, and they are wonderful cars to own and enjoy. I heartily recommend them based on my own positive experiences.
